- Sodium hypochlorite is used as a bleaching agent in paper and
textile industries and as a disinfectant in drinking water and swimming pools.
The most commonly used solution contains 10-15% chlorine (100-150 mg/L) but it
is very volatile and is affected by temperature, light, pH and presence of
heavy metals. The level of hypochlorite should be monitored frequently.

NITROGEN (NITRATE) TEST KITS

- Nitrate is an essential nutrient for plants and must be
monitored in order to mantain proper health and optimum yield. However,
excessive levels are detrimental and can even be toxic, effectively
burning the plants. Traces of nitrate can be found in natural
surface water, while underground water contains high concentrations, which can
represent a problem with fish farming. Nitrate may also be found in high
concentrations in industrial discharges and waste water. In drinking water,
nitrate level must be monitored because of its toxic nature. Domestic water
supplies should not contain nitrate in excess of 45 mg/L.

- The pH value of water is related to a large number of dissolved
substances and is therefore a good indicator of the quality of water. In
applications where water is treated chemically, the pH value should be measured
continuously. In chemical reactions, the solids present in wastewater
precipitate and the water is neutralized and decontaminated. During these
reactions, the pH must be kept at the right value, since a solution that is too
acid or alkaline may interfere with the precipitation of the solids and will
influence the efficiency of the process. Hannas line of chemical test
kits covers the pH range in the scales between pH 3 and 10. The colorimetric pH
kits are also available with an additional reagent against chlorine
interference. To order these simply add /0 to the end of the part
number.

- Phenols are widely used in the chemical and petrochemical
industries. They are also used as coloring agents, indicators as well as
disinfectants. Phenols can be found both in industrial discharges and in
natural waters. The presence of phenols in water, even in very low
concentrations, can cause an unpleasant odor.

- Sulfate is widely present in natural waters. It is not toxic
but has to be kept below a certain threshold to prevent it from creating an
unpleasant taste in water. The concentrations are particularly higher close to
mine run-off water. Sulfate is widely used as a nutrient in agriculture. The
Hanna kit covers an extensive range.

- Even though zinc is nontoxic to human beings, concentrations
higher than 5 mg/L (ppm) can cause a bitter, astringent taste. This level of
zinc can result in a milky color in alkaline water and is irritant to the human
digestive system. Zinc in low quantities is a beneficial and necessary element
for body growth. Zinc is normally introduced into drinking water through
industrial effluents. In addition to drinking water, zinc is measured in
surface finishing, boilers and cooling towers, water conditioning and effluent
waters.

HI 3893
SALT WATER, AQUACULTURE & AQUARIUM TEST KIT
 |
Many parameters affect the well being and growth of
fish in aquaculture and aquariums. Hanna offers a wide range of single and
multi-parameter test kits as well as electronic pocket and portable instruments
to help operators keep all of these parameters under strict control. HI 3893 is
part of Hannas efforts in addressing the needs of operators in these
fields. HI 3893 unifies in one package 4 different tests, namely, ammonia,
nitrate, nitrite and pH. It is an ideal kit for crab and lobster aquariums and
saltwater holding tanks at wholesalers as well as at retail shops. The kit
provides for 50 tests each of pH, nitrite, nitrate and ammonia. All the
apparatus necessary to perform the tests are also included in the package. The
simplicity of the kit and its affordable price make it suitable for specialists
and hobbyists whether technically oriented or not.

- In agricultural applications, monitoring the quality of the soil
is extremely important for a healthy growth of the crops. The pH level
is an excellent guide as to which plants may thrive in a particular
terrain, as well as indicating which fertilizers to use. Hannas
combination test kits allow you to test not only for pH, but for nitrogen,
phosphorous and potassium as well, which are just as important for the
quality of terrain. HI 3895 and HI 3896 are very easy to use: sample
of terrain, diluted in water, reacts with the chemical reagents supplied
in the kit. The result is a colored solution which is compared to the
chart provided to determine the concentration of the element tested.
The concentration is given in an easily-understood trace, low, medium
and high ranges. The professional HI 3896 kit is supplied with an extraction
solution which facilitates the precipitation of suspended solids so
that measurement can be taken immediately. HI 3895 comes with all the
necessary components for 10 tests. HI 3896 provides for 25 tests and
includes a useful guide to measurement.
