The IRU-1000 series provides cost effective ultrasonic technology for a variety of
applications. There are three models available each requiring a 12 - 30 volt DC power
supply and using potentiometers for sensor adjustments. All models provide a pulse width
output, and detect targets up to ten feet from the transducer. In addition to the pulse
width output the IRU-1001 provides a trip point which may be adjusted to any distance
within the range of the sensor. The IRU-1002 also provides a trip point but is encased in
a NEMA 4X housing. The IRU-1003 has a 4 - 20mA analog output that is scaled over the range
of the sensor and like the IRU-1002, is encased in a NEMA 4X housing.
Applications
The IRU-1000 series ultrasonic sensors offer advantages over other technologies in
presence detection and linear position measurement applications; they are not affected by
target color, translucency, or lighting conditions and will detect virtually any object.
The pulse width output may be connected with one of Lundahl Instruments' remote displays
providing a visual distance indicator for equipment operators. The trip points provided by
the IRU-1001 and IRU-1002 are used in presence detection applications. When an object
enters the defined trip distance the trip activates sending an input signal to attached
equipment. For automated systems requiring continuous distance measurements, the
IRU-1003's 4-20mA analog output may be interfaced to control equipment.
Typical applications include:
Vehicle Detection
Vehicle Detection at Drive-up Windows
An ultrasonic sensor is a reliable non-contact method for vehicle detection. The
IRU-1002 sensor continues to function even when exposed to harsh weather. At drive-up
windows, the "electrostatic" type ultrasonic sensors are subject to tampering
leaving them inoperable. The flat face of the transducer on the IRU-1002 is less
susceptible to tampering. This sensor is more cost effective than installing labor
intensive ground loops and detects vehicles of all colors and size. The sensor has an
adjustable trip distance to accommodate most applications. For best performance, the
sensor must be aligned at a right angle to the vehicle and approximately 24 inches above
the ground.
The IRU-5000 series sensors are an economical solution for linear position measurements
in industrial applications and for a wide variety of level applications. This series of
sensors is extremely versatile with operating software suitable for many applications. The
sensors are completely programmable through an RS-232 serial interface and a DOS or
Windows based utility program. Outputs include 0-20mA, and 4-20mA. The distance
measurement may also be obtained through the RS-232 by sending an ASCII character to the
sensor when it is operating. There are four models to choose from depending on operating
range and mounting requirements. These ultrasonic sensors offer advantages over other
technologies for similar applications. They are not affected by target color, translucency
or lighting conditions and they will detect virtually any object. Temperature compensation
is standard.
Applications
Designed for use in a wide range of industrial automation applications, the IRU-5180
and IRU-5280 self-contained ultrasonic sensors provide an analog output for interface with
PLC's, remote displays or drive controllers. A variety of setup options are presented in a
user friendly Dos or Windows based program allowing the sensor to be customized to each
unique application.
Sensor control settings allow the user to adjust the ultrasonic signal strength to the
minimum required for reliable detection of the target. This helps to eliminate detection
of false echoes, while filtering options reduce interference from false echoes or noise.
"AutosSense" software is also available to automatically adjust the
sensor. Analog scaling allows the end user to select the current output (0-20mA or 4-20mA)
and then scale the output over the required measurement range.
Typical applications include:
Dimensioning and Sorting
Measurement of Roll Diameter
Roll Diameter Measurement with the IRU-5000
Accurate roll-diameter measurements are easily achieved on most any product, including
paper, plastic and even metals or fibers. The IRU-5180 or IRU-5280 sensor transmits an
analog signal to a PLC or drive controller that is proportional to the roll diameter. The
analog signal can be scaled based on the maximum and minimum roll size. The adjustable
sample rate and sample averaging allow the system response time to be customized to the
application. The non-contact operation of an ultrasonic sensor eliminates problems
associated with mechanical devices. There is typically no maintenance associated with the
sensor operation and the sensor is out of the way where it will not interfere with roll
changes.
The DCU-1100 series sensors are designed for level monitoring and control of both
liquids and solids, and for industrial control applications. The microprocessor control
provides special filtering for dependable operation. There are six models available housed
in durable PVC to withstand the most demanding applications. The sensors are simple to
program using the built-in keypad. The 4-20mA analog signal is easily scaled through the
keypad, as is the programming of the two trip points. Models for tank applications have
"AutoSense" software which self-tunes the sensor to optimize performance
and ensure reliable operation during changing conditions. All DCU-1100 sensors operate
from 12-30 V DC, have user programmable sample rate, filtering and internal temperature
compensation.
Applications
The DCU-1101 and DCU-1103 self-contained ultrasonic sensors are ideal in collision
avoidance and process control applications. The rugged, potted PVC housing and PVC
enclosed ceramic transducer provide resistance to vibration and protection from harsh
environments, wet or dry. The DCU-1100 series sensors are microprocessor-controlled and
provide a high level of programmability allowing sensor operation to be modified for each
unique application.
In addition to the features of the DCU-1101 and the DCU-1103, the DCU-1102 and DCU-1104
provide "AutoSense" software to automatically adjust sensor settings. This
makes them ideal for tank level and environmental monitoring applications in which
acoustical properties may change to affect the performance of the sensor.
Typical applications include:
Collision Avoidance
Monitoring Liquids/Bulk Solids
Bulk Solids Monitoring
The DCU-1100 series sensors are ideal for monitoring most bulk solid materials. The
sensors provide a 4-20mA analog signal that is proportional to the product level. There
are also two trip points to provide alarms for high/low level or loss-of-echo conditions.
The integral display allows for easy set up and calibration. With most bulk solid
applications, the product does not produce an ideal reflective target. Because of this,
the effective operating range of the sensor must be reduced. There also may be
interference from the falling product during fill operation which will affect the sensor
operation as will extremely heavy dust. The control function required for each application
should be carefully evaluated.
The DCU-1400 series sensors have been designed for monitoring and control of liquid
levels. The microprocessor control provides special filtering for dependable operation.
There are two models available housed in durable PVC to withstand the most demanding
applications. The sensors are simple to program using the built-in keypad. The 4-20mA
analog signal is easily scaled through the keypad as is the programming of the single
solid state relay output. The relay can be programmed for high and/or low level alarm,
pump control or loss of echo. The units operate from 12-30 V DC, have user programmable
sample rate, filtering and internal temperature compensation.
Applications
The DCU-1400 series ultrasonic level sensors feature Lundahl Instruments
"AutoSense" software to automatically adjusts the sensor to maximize performance
under the changing conditions within a tank. "AutoSense" software combined with
a 4 - 20mA analog output provides an ideal sensor for continuous liquid level monitoring
applications. The 4 - 20mA output is easily scaled within the operating range of the
sensor, and may also be inverted to provide a 20 - 4mA output.
The DCU-1400 series sensors also provide a programmable relay. The user selects from
eight trip types and then programs the begin and end points for relay activation. The
relay is suitable for use in tank level control applications including the control of lift
or pumping stations.
Typical applications include:
Environmental Monitoring
Monitoring Tank Levels - see below
Monitoring Tank Level
Monitoring level in a bulk storage tank is one of the primary applications for
ultrasonic sensors. The DCU-1400 series sensors are ideal in tanks up to 25 feet deep. The
sensors provide a 4-20mA analog signal and one trip point that can be programmed for high
and low alarms, loss-of-echo conditions, or control of a single pump or valve. The analog
scaling is simple with the push of just two buttons. The filtering and response time is
user programmable to meet the requirements of most any tank application. Turbulent
surfaces and agitators are easily filtered out to provide reliable level indication. The
sensors should be mounted away from inlets to prevent interference with the level
measurement.
The DCU-1600 series sensors have been designed for monitoring and control of liquid
levels in small vessels with depths up to 72 inches (182.88cm). The microprocessor control
provides special filtering for dependable operation. There are two models available housed
in durable PVC to withstand the most demanding applications. The sensors are easy to
install using the 1" NPT or 2" NPT fittings. The 4-20mA analog signal is scaled
using an RS-232 interface through a PC with a DOS or Windows based program. The DCU-1600
series sensors have "AutoSense" software which self-tunes the sensor to optimize
performance and ensure reliable operation during changing conditions. The unique
properties of this model allow the sensor to maintain high level indications even if
submersed. The units operate from 12 - 30 V DC and are temperature compensated.
Applications
The DCU-1602 and DCU-1603 feature an operating range of 4 to 72 inches (10.16 to
182.88cm) making them the ideal solution for monitoring and control of small tanks. The
4-20mA analog output provides for visual indication of tank level via a panel meter or the
analog output may be connected to a PLC for automated level control. For setting
parameters or for serial operation in combination with a PC the RS-232 interface is used
via a user friendly DOS or Windows based utility program.
Both sensors are equipped with temperature compensation circuitry to ensure accurate
readings in environments with temperature changes. Operating temperature is between -30°
and 60° Celsius.
Typical applications include:
55 Gallon Drums
Level Measurement in Small Tanks
Cooling Tower Reservoirs
Fuel Oil Tanks
Diesel Fuel Tanks
Inventory Management of Bulk Liquids Stored in Small Tanks
The DCU-1700 series provides self-contained ultrasonic level sensing for level control
in sewer lift stations, sumps and tanks. Four solid state relays and a pulse width output
for interface with a digital display provide pump and alarm control as well as visual
level indication.
The sensor requires a 24 V DC regulated power supply and is mounted in the lift station
using a 1" or 2" NPT or using standard pipe clamping techniques. Sensor
adjustments are accomplished using a DOS based program, the changes are written to
non-volatile E˛ memory and are retained in the sensor if power is interrupted.
Once the sensor is in operation Lundahl Instruments "AutoSense" software
adjusts sensor settings to produce the most reliable readings. In addition, the
"AutoTest" routine may be used to verify that the hardware is functioning
properly.
Applications
The DCU-1700 series provides lift station control functions without requiring an
external PLC. Two pump relays control the operation of both lead and lag pumps and
optionally alternate the pumps between lead and lag status. The high level alarm relay is
normally open and closes when the high level setting is reached. The low level/sensor
fault relay is a normally open relay that is closed when the system is operating
correctly. This relay will open indicating there is a problem under the following
conditions:
Level Detected Below Set Point
No Target or Level Detected
Sensor Loses Power
Typical applications include:
Lift Station Control
Self-Contained Lift
Station Control
The capability of the DCU-1700 series sensors allows the user to simplify the
installation by using the sensor to provide all control functions. The user-friendly
utility program provides adjustment of the trip locations for the pump control and alarm
levels. The low-level/loss-of-echo alarm provides warning if there is a sensor failure
providing increased reliability to the system. The ability to alternate lead and lag pumps
and program a start delay to prevent both pumps from starting at the same time are added
benefits. Sensor filtering allows the sensor to ignore unwanted echoes and a programmable
loss-of-echo delay allows the sensor time to recover from a loss-of-echo condition before
activating the alarm.
The DCU-1800 series sensors function through RS-485 serial communication. The sensors
are configured and provide measurement information through the serial link. Adjustments
include filtering, sample rate and averaging. RS-485 allows multiple sensors to be
addressed and to communicate over a pair of wires. This series of sensors is ideal for
multiple tank applications where the information is taken into a computer system through
the serial port. The sensors can be configured to provide distance measurements, level, or
volume on linear tanks. Temperature compensation is standard, allowing the temperature at
the sensor to be read. They are powered by 12-24 V DC.
Applications
The DCU-1800 series sensors utilize an RS-485 interface, making them ideal for
interfacing with computers or data acquisitions systems. The sensor is set up with a
simple ASCII command set that is very versatile allowing the output to correspond to
distance measurements, tank level, or even tank volume on linear tanks.
The RS-485 half-duplex communication allows up to eight sensors to be connected to a
two-wire bus up to 3500 feet in length. Each sensor on the bus is individually addressed
and can be programmed specifically to the application. For example, one sensor may be
monitoring a roll diameter and another monitoring the level of an ink tank. The
flexibility of programming and communication allows a single sensor model to function
reliably in a variety of applications.
Typical applications include:
Process Control
Multiple Tank Farms
Multi-Tank Indication via RS-485
Measuring the level of multiple tanks and transmitting the information to a central
location is common. The DCU-1800 series sensors have an RS-485 serial link to allow the
sensors to interface to a data collection system. The two-wire RS-485 system allows eight
sensors to be addressed by communicating over the same pair of wires. As each sensor is
polled, the level information is transmitted to the computer system. The sensors can be
programmed to output actual level data, or even volume on linear tanks. Any sensor
adjustments are carried out through the serial communication. There is no need to access
the sensor to make changes to the operating parameters.
Lundahl Instruments DCU-1900 series sensors use ultrasonic technology to reliably
measure distances up to 20 feet. This series of sensors is extremely versatile with
selectable "AutoSense"
or standard operating software suitable for many applications. The sensors are completely programmable using Lundahl
Instruments ACC-RST2001 programming module and a DOS or Windows based utility
program. An isolated 4-20mA output is provided for connection to PLCs, drives or
panel meters. Filtering, calibration, and temperature compensation features help maintain
accurate readings regardless of changing conditions such as daily and seasonal temperature
change.
Applications
The DCU-1900 series sensors are designed to operate off-the-shelf with no user
adjustments being necessary. The 4-20mA output is scaled over the operating range of the
sensor and the AutoSense software is enabled. This is ideal for
applications where the target distance is slow to change such as monitoring liquids and
bulk solids or slow moving process applications. The filtering helps ensure accuracy by
ignoring false echoes or temporary targets.
In applications such as product dimensioning and sorting where the measured distance
changes quickly, it may be necessary to adjust the response time of the sensor. In some
applications scaling the 4-20mA output may be necessary. This is accomplished using
Lundahl Instruments ACC-RST2001 programming module and software.
Typical applications include:
Product Dimensioning and Sorting
Measurement of Roll Diameter
Roll Diameter Measurement
with the DCU-1900 Series
Accurate roll-diameter measurements are easily achieved on most any product, including
paper, plastic and even metals or fibers. The DCU-1910 or DCU-1920 sensor transmits an
analog signal to a PLC or drive controller that is proportional to the roll diameter. The
analog signal can be scaled based on the maximum and minimum roll size using the
ACC-RST2001 programming module. The adjustable sample rate and sample averaging allow the
system response time to be customized to the application. The non-contact operation of an
ultrasonic sensor eliminates problems associated with mechanical devices. There is
typically no maintenance associated with the sensor operation and the sensor is out of the
way where it will not interfere with roll changes.
The DCU-7000 series features three models. Two are designed for environmental
applications, such as stream level (stage) or snow depth, and one is designed for
industrial applications. The sensors are designed to be interfaced with a data logger or
other data collection equipment. The sensors have special filtering to optimize
performance with the short run times that are typical when operating with a data logger.
Continuous operation is also acceptable. Programming of the sensors including scaling the
0-5 V DC analog output is accomplished via an RS-232 interface. Distance measurements can
also be received through the RS-232 interface. Accuracy is maintained through an internal
temperature sensor or with an external temperature sensor and the correction formula in
the data logger. The sensors have low current draw of less than 45mA @ 12 V DC. This makes
them well suited for applications operating on battery power and solar panels.
Applications
The DCU-7070 self-contained ultrasonic sensor system features a highly sensitive
electrostatic transducer allowing for detection of materials with poor ultrasonic
reflection characteristics such as textiles. Data logger interface makes the DCU-7070 easy
to use in industrial applications requiring data storage.
An environmentally sealed housing and low current draw are combined in the DCU-7110
producing an excellent sensor for environmental monitoring applications. These
applications include stream staging and reservoir level measurement.
For measurement of snow levels the DCU-7210 features an electrostatic transducer in a
protective case. As with other sensors in the DCU-7000 series the DCU-7210 may be
interfaced with a data logger to store measurements collected by the sensor.
Typical applications include:
Stream Stage
Stream Stage
Ultrasonic technology offers several advantages over contacting level measurement
devices in stream staging applications. The sensor is removed from the water, so in areas
prone to flooding or high levels of scouring there is no threat of the sensor being washed
down stream. The sensors can be mounted without a stilling well saving installation
expenses. However, the sensors will function reliably in existing stilling wells. The
analog signal can be scaled according to the maximum and minimum flow rates. The DCU-7110
sensor has been designed specifically for interfacing with a data logger. In applications
requiring long range measurements, contact devices may produce better accuracy.
