For temperature ranges too high for oils, we can offer bath salts that have a viscosity in the molten state, close to that of water. For convenience, it comes in the form of a granulate, which makes it easier to fill the bath.
Between the melting points of 150 and 550 ° C, this salt has the highest temperature stability and uniformity that bath liquid can have. Characteristics of liquids
Before choosing a bath fluid, it is important to understand what its certain characteristics should be. We have seen bath liquids for which the temperature range is claimed, extending from the crystallization temperature to the ignition temperature or beyond.
For example, silicon oil type 710 has a freezing point of –22 ° C, but not a word is said that at this point the oil becomes too thick for normal flow. In fact, oil type 710 should be used up to approximately 80 ° C. This restriction is imposed not by the freezing point, but by viscosity. Questionable is the usable range. Compliance with the requirements of calibration – a characteristic that has significant value.
The range of viscosity used is determined by a mixing or pumping device. Fluke Calibration baths can be operated with fluids whose viscosity does not exceed 50 centistokes. This gives an additional usable range at lower fluid temperature levels.
Some baths, announced as a calibration, for proper operation require the use of a fluid with a viscosity of not higher than 10 centistokes. The ranges used in our table on the previous page assume the use of the Fluke bath.
